Our work
Everything we do at the Women’s Prize Trust is underpinned by our mission to change the world through books by women, opening up pathways into reading and writing for the storytellers and booklovers of tomorrow and championing equity of opportunity.
This is how we achieve it:
Writers
We showcase the very best writing by women for everyone through the Women’s Prize for Fiction – the greatest international celebration of women’s creativity, honouring outstanding, ambitious, original fiction written in English by women. Established in 1996 to highlight and remedy the imbalance in coverage, respect and reverence given to women writers versus their male peers, the Prize has helped launch and define careers. The books highlighted each year contribute to an exceptional canon of writing by women – the Women’s Prize Library – entertaining readers and holding a mirror up to the issues at the core of our global society. We inspire the writers of tomorrow, unlocking potential and nurturing creativity. Through talent development programmes like Discoveries, we are opening up routes to creative self-expression to women of all backgrounds, and helping to dismantle the barriers writers tell us they face, such as lack of confidence, absence of role models, and scant information about how the publishing industry works.
Readers
We believe that reading increases empathy, expands imaginations and empowers connection – simply put, books by women can change the world. That’s why we are on a mission to get the world reading more books by women through increased engagement and access, providing free books, resources and community to those who need them most.
